  4.     As Jordan's King Hussein discussed the prospects for
  5. Arab-Israeli peace with George Bush in Washington last week,
  6. life was decidedly less than peaceful in the monarch's desert
  7. realm. The trouble started in the southern town of Ma`an when
  8. thousands of demonstrators attacked government office buildings
  9. and burned banks to protest increases in the price of food,
  10. gasoline and other goods. The riots quickly spread to other
  11. southern towns and then to the northern city of Salt. Hussein's
  12. brother Crown Prince Hassan, whose car was pelted with stones
  13. when he visited Ma`an, blamed Islamic fundamentalists for
  14. exploiting the unrest. At least eight people had been killed,
  15. apparently all of them civilians.

  17.     The disturbances shocked many Jordanians, whose country has
  18. been remarkably stable for nearly two decades in spite of its
  19. precarious geographical location. Outwardly the protesters
  20. focused their anger on Prime Minister Zaid Rifai, chanting,
  21. "This man must resign, or we will burn the country!"

  23.     Leaving the U.S., Hussein canceled a visit to Britain and
  24. returned home. He had cause for concern. Like Hussein, most of
  25. the rioters were Bedouins and thus had been considered his most
  26. loyal subjects.
